Summary

Best known for his fashion illustrations for magazines like Vogue, WWD, Anna Piaggi's Vanity, Interview, and Viva, Antonio Lopez (1943-1987) worked and experimented in all different areas of the arts. Often compared to Warhol, Lopez experimented with filmmaking, Polaroid photography, and discovered fashion stars such as the models Jerry Hall, Jessica Lange, Tina Chow, and Grace Jones. Bill Cunningham credits Antonio as the person who first put a camera in his hands, when, as a young hat designer, he would hang out with Antonio's crowd, and one day Antonio suggested that he take pictures of everything he saw there. Born in Puerto Rico, Antonio grew up in Spanish Harlem, and took a job illustrating for John Fairchild's WWD before graduating from FIT. Antonio and his partner, Juan Ramos, spent the '60s in New York, where Antonio later worked for the New York Times. In the late '60s, the couple moved to Paris, where Antonio drew for Elle and other publications. The two became nightlife fixtures at places like Club Sept and were part of a circle that included Karl Lagerfeld, then the designer of Chloe, as well as Jerry Hall and Tina China Chow. In the '80s, Juan and Antonio returned to New York. Antonio worked tirelessly through his short life (he died in 1987), producing an incredible amount of illustrations, illustrated journals, and photographs that all reside in an archive now. This book will show the range of Antonio's work, as well as convey his broad and enduring influence on the fashion world today -- after the success of her show at New York Fashion Week in September 2011, Anna Sui told the New York Times On the Runway blog that the collection was inspired by Lopez's work in Paris during the 1970s. In addition to quotes from friends such as Cunningham, Jerry Hall, and Grace Jones, the book will feature an epilogue by Anna Sui, a longtime admirer of Antonio.
