At the time, moving to China to teach English to university students seemed like a good idea. During her first culture-shocked weeks in Wuhan, Temple Bartlett encountered children who screamed and ran at the sight of a "foreign devil" and school officials snooping in her apartment. Her original plan was to spend a year teaching English in China to reevaluate her career goals and take a break from dating. In reality, she stayed for two and half years, met her husband in Wuhan (no he's not, he has red hair), learned how to be a teacher, and developed an addiction to the fascinating world that her Chinese ESL students described as "Communism with Chinese characteristics." "An Assault on My Senses: Living and Working in Central China" began as a series of emails the author sent to American friends and family. It's a loosely chronological journey through her two and a half years in China.
