SummaryTable of ContentsEditorial Reviews
Case Studies in Immunology presents forty-two real clinical cases that illustrate, in a clinical context, essential points about the mechanisms of immunity, as well as describe and explain some of the immunological problems most often seen in a clinic. This new edition vividly illustrates the importance of an understanding of immunology in diagnosis and therapy. Seven completely new cases have been added to this edition. Each case is presented in a consistent format. Basic scientific facts introduce the case history, providing essential background information. The case history is followed by a summary of the disease under study. Cases end with several questions and discussion points that highlight lessons learned from the case. Case Studies in Immunology can be used as a stand alone book, or as a clinical companion alongside Immunobiology, Sixth Edition (ISBN 0 815341016) and The Immune System, Second Edition (ISBN 0 8153 40931).

Forty-two clinical cases are presented in this book. They demonstrate situations in which an understanding of the role of immunology assists in diagnosis and therapy. Cases include more common disorders such as lupus, hypersensitivity to poison ivy, and infectious mononucleosis as well as genetic immunodeficiencies and autoimmune disorders. Each case first presents the basic scientific facts needed to understand the case history; then a brief summary of the disease itself is presented and finally each case has questions and discussion points to highlight the lessons to be learned. There are excellent colored photographs, diagrams and charts as illustrations to help with the presentation of each case. However, no references are included with any cases. They would be helpful to provide for additional information on the disease under consideration. This book can serve as a companion to a basic or introductory immunology text for a better understanding of the clinical aspects of the discipline. Instructors adopting this text will have a link to Garland Science Classwire where textbook art can be found in a downloadable web ready format or a Power Point format.Academic, medical and hospital libraries, especially those with training programs would find this a useful addition to the collection.
