For every action there is a reaction, and when babies are hungry, scared, or sleepy, they need feeding, hugging, and rocking by those who love them, in a playful lift-the-flap book that celebrates the interaction between baby and parent. A playful lift-the-flap book that celebrates the interaction between baby and parent, and baby and book! Giggle along with baby in this bright and cheery board book that includes seven flaps. Love that book! Susan Milord lives in Norwich, Vermont, where she finds inspiration for her books all around her. Love That Baby! by Susan Milord pictures the daily interactions between infants of many different backgrounds and their parents with the lift of a flap. A chalk-and-watercolor image of Baby and Teddy bear ("Baby is napping") lifts to reveal Mommy lifting her child, "Wake that baby!" When "Baby is hungry," Dad comes to the rescue: "Feed that baby!" Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information. PreS -Toddlers and their parents will enjoy this tale of action followed by reaction. The story depicts typical occurrences in the life of a baby and the lift of a flap shows a parental response. For example, the page that states "Baby is hungry" shows an anxious youngster, but when viewers lift the flap, they find his dad spooning up a treat and the words "Feed that baby!" The colored-pencil and watercolor illustrations are bright, appealing, and uncluttered. Simply drawn characters and backgrounds, washed in pastel colors and defined with crisp black outlines, are accompanied by simple three-word phrases. The durable cardboard pages make this an appropriate book for little hands. However, the sharp edges make this book unsuitable for babies. While it doesn't cover new territory, it celebrates the bond between parent and child. For toddler storytimes, pair it with Mary Murphy's I Kissed the Baby! (Candlewick, 2003). It is also a soft, gentle choice for bedtime sharing.-Linda Zeilstra Sawyer, Skokie Public Library, IL [Page 101]. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information. |
