Gr 3-5-Series titles that consider the foods of religious or secular celebrations. The formats are identical: a holiday is described, two or three recipes are presented, then information is given about other ways the day or festivity is marked. In each book, three holidays are examined (Holi, Divali, and Ganesh Chaturthi in the first title, and Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat, and Mid-Autumn in the second). Appealing color photographs inform readers both atmospherically and literally: scenes of busy preparations and celebrations accompany the holiday descriptions, and small photographs illustrate the instructions. The directions are clear, encouraging, and not too difficult. Safety and allergy precautions are included. Each volume concludes with equipment, cooking, and food notes. Many of these holidays will be new to readers and being introduced to the foods associated with them is a great way to encourage interest in them.-Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
