Gr 5-8-Two somber titles that focus on global problems and how they are being addressed. Senker does a good job bringing to light the world's health woes, from leprosy and malaria in developing nations to smoking and improper nutrition in wealthier countries. Mental health issues are also discussed. Since its humble Canadian beginnings in 1970, Greenpeace has grown into an international activist force to be reckoned with. Its campaigns include dealing with global warming, saving whales and seal pups, and keeping Antarctica as a nature reserve. Sheehan gives an evenhanded description of how effective each endeavor has been. The books are well illustrated; some photographs, such as a victim of river blindness and the head of a butchered Siberian tiger, are graphic. Both titles give a history of the organizations and delve into the problems as well as the successes each one has faced. Personal asides throughout help to put a human face on each title. These two sobering books, rather dry in tone, are informative and well organized for report writers.-Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information. |
