Explains what a refugee is, and how war, persecution, economic hardship, and natural disasters cause people to leave their homelands. Gr 4-6-The purpose of this book is to aid youngsters in developing their own opinions about this topic. Refugees are defined according to the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention as those who have fled their country and are unable to return due to a "well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion." A distinction is made between refugees, internally displaced persons, and economic migrants. The author uses illuminating statistics to summarize the plight of individuals in various geographic areas and times. Issues such as war, natural disasters, abuse of human rights, and economics are discussed as causative factors. Case studies that quote refugees create additional impact. Color and black-and-white photographs amplify the nature of the circumstances of those affected. Involved organizations and additional books to read are appended. This title provides current information for readers interested in learning more about global social issues.-Sharon A. Neal, Alvernia College, Reading, PA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information. |
