SummaryExcerptsAuthor BiographyEditorial Reviews
For forty years, the Twelve Colonies of Man experienced peace, united since the war against the man-made Cylons. The Cylons, mechanical beings created to perform the manual labor civilization required, were gone forever…or so humanity thought.

But in those years, the Cylons developed new Cylons that looked and acted like humans--with one goal in mind: to destroy all humanity! When they suddenly attacked the Twelve Worlds, humanity’s extinction seemed inevitable.

Only a single warship survived the massive attack: Battlestar Galactica, the oldest ship in the fleet, ready to be decommissioned and turned into a museum. Commander William Adama, himself set to retire, had but one course: to marshal the meager forces available, a ragtag crew of misfits and green recruits, to prevent their enemy from wiping out the last vestiges of the human race. But the Cylons, stronger, smarter, and driven to destroy their creators, may just be too powerful for them and all of humanity to survive.

A novel based on the popular miniseries finds Commander Adama, President Roslin, and the pilots of a last surviving battleship struggling to protect the remnants of a human civilization that has been nearly wiped out by human-created robotic Cylons. Simultaneous.

The first novel based on the SCI FI Channel's biggest hit series ever!
DESPERATE TIMES

He was desperate, and that creaky old warship still had some juice left in it. He was willing to roll the dice; it could be humanity’s last chance. Commander William Adama, now the highest-ranking military officer on the Twelve Colonies, had no choice but to pin his hopes on the fleet’s ragtag survivors aboard the Battlestar Galactica, a relic that was supposed to be mothballed to become a museum.

And who is humanity’s last hope? Apollo? Adama’s son is a straight arrow, a much needed voice of reason in the tumultuous times aboard the ship and especially in the power struggles between his father and President Roslin, who rose to her position by being the highest ranking surviving politician. Starbuck? Apollo’s complete opposite, the cigar-chomping, defiant hell-raiser is the best pilot in the fleet, but her reckless abandon in action--and off-duty-- may lead to the entire ship’s undoing. Some pin hopes on Gaius Baltar, an unparalleled genius . . . but he was personally responsible for betraying mankind, the one secret he may not be able to live with. And if humanity’s chances weren’t bad enough, one of the crew members could actually be a Cylon, without even knowing it.

Somehow, Adama has to find a way to keep the old rust-bucket Galatica in one piece, and humanity’s hopes alive, or all its striving will have been in vain.
Jeffrey A. Carver’s most recent novel, Eternity’s End, was a finalist for the Nebula Award. The author of more than a dozen novels, he lives in Arlington, MA.

In this novelization of the Sci Fi Channel's forthcoming miniseries based on Larson's 1978 Star Wars knockoff, Carver (Eternity's End ) must grapple with the product of imaginations much inferior to his own. In the far future, humanity fights a desperate battle against the Cylons, rebellious robots once created by humans to do their dirty work. Originally, the average Cylon looked like a toaster with legs. But, 40 years later, the new Cylon model looks human, is irresistibly sexy and given to melodramatic explications of fiendish plans in the seconds between its victim's seduction and death. After a coordinated sneak attack, all that remains between the Cylons and the extinction of humankind is the interstellar aircraft carrier of the title, about to be mothballed as a museum. Commander Adama, himself about to retire, must pull together an ensemble cast for much derring-do and very few surprises. Readers who demand nothing more than killing time, trees and Cylons may find this book superficially entertaining. (Feb.)
