SummaryEditorial Reviews
Six topical titles examine developments in major social concerns of the past 100 years from a global perspective. The series traces key issues from early controversies to the present day. Significant events are enhanced with quotes from witnesses and prominent personalities of the decade. The text discusses individuals associated with these social concerns, as well as events that marked or caused important shifts in public opinion.
Gr 4-7-An examination of bioethics and how it has developed over the last 100 years. This is a complex issue and Snedden does a good job of explaining it, beginning with relevant earlier thinking that includes introductions to Hippocrates and Thomas Percival. Popular thought and accepted practice regarding medical ethics changed more in the 20th century than during any other time period, and key moments and influential opinions are well highlighted in frequent sidebars. Reproductive rights, euthanasia, organ donation, psychiatry, eugenics, and cloning are among the topics discussed. Worldwide examples are given, but the focus remains on America and the U.K. The author points out all sides of issues, and is up-to-date on facts and philosophies. Featuring color and black-and-white illustrations and an attractive layout, this book is more appealing than other titles in this area. Recent offerings on this subject include Terry O'Neill's Biomedical Ethics (Greenhaven, 1998) and Lisa Yount's Issues in Biomedical Ethics (Lucent, 1998). As Snedden's book is for a younger audience, it is a worthwhile purchase.-Andrew Medlar, Chicago Public Library, IL Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
