Provides a history of Iraq and describes its relationship with the West, particularly focusing on the government, politics, and foreign relations of the country after Saddam Hussein became president in 1979. Gr 5-8 -These volumes give short analyses of the history of the Middle East, with an emphasis on events since the mid-20th century and how they have led to controversies and conflicts in the region. Each attractively designed volume contains numerous archival photographs, maps, text boxes with relevant quotations, a table of facts and figures, and brief biographies of important historical figures and politicians. Middle East and Oil are more general discussions of the history of the region, the significance of the colonial experience and Middle Eastern interaction with the West, and the importance of oil as a resource and source of conflict. Israel , Iraq , and Iran focus specifically on the historical reasons for the conflicts within these countries and the current political implications. These titles cover some of the same ground as the "War and Conflict in the Middle East" series (Rosen), but are less focused on military actions. Instead, they concentrate on the broader history, including European and American political and military interventions and how they have affected the current situation. The books are up-to-date and present information in a clear, readable manner.-Kathleen E. Gruver, Burlington County Library, Westampton, NJ [Page 154]. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information. |
