Provides the health professional and medical investigator with a reliable and critical overview of all that is known, and much that is suspected but unproven, with respect to adverse drug reactions and interactions. Extensive references. Previous edition: c1996.
Over fifty years and fourteen editions, Meyler's Side Effects of Drugs has become the definitive source for information about the potential negative effects of drugs. Remaining true to the goal of its first editor, Leo Meyler, the book provides "a reliable and critical overview of all that is known and much that is merely suspected but unproven - with respect to adverse drug reactions and interactions."An international team of expert contributors provides comprehensive chapter-by-chapter analyses; each of the forty-nine chapters deals with a well-defined family of substances that have a close pharmacological and/or chemical relationship to one another. Each chapter presents one or more Side Effects Monographs; a monograph may discuss a group of related drugs or the best-known representative of the group followed by shorter accounts of individual drugs with their variations from the general pattern. Monographs follow a standard format for ease of use and include adverse reaction pattern, effects on organs and systems, special risk situations, withdrawal effects, second-generation effects, over dosage, interactions, and effects on diagnostic routines. Cross-references to Side Effects of Drugs Annual, the yearly update to the main volume, are provided throughout the text. Some chapters that detail many substances make use of tables for greater clarity. Every chapter concludes with extensive references to the literature.Drugs are classified according to their main field of application with some reference to secondary applications as necessary. The most common nonproprietary drug name is used; when unavailable, chemical or trade names are used. A complete Index of Drugs and a selective Index of Side Effects adds to the book's ease of use.Meyler's Side Effects of Drugs is a valuable reference for doctors, pharmacists, or any health professional wanting an informed view of undesired drug effects. It is essential to pharmacy library collections.Reviewer: Victoria Tamborrino, Associate Professor and Science Librarian, St. John's University Library, tamborrv@stjohns.edu Copyright 2002 E-Streams Reviews |
