SummaryTable of Contents
This book provides the first unified, chemically Oriented introduction to mammalian semiochemistry, a new area of interdisciplinary Study which stands on the borders of chemistry and biology. Although biologists have been aware of the potential importance of the field for some time, the synthesis with chemistry, which it is this book’s purpose to encourage, is only now beginning. In contrast, investigations in and applications of insect Semiochemistry have already received much attention. The author provides an overview of what is known of the origin, nature and significance of those substances which carry information or otherwise mediate interactions between mammals, emphasizing features Which are characteristic of mammalian systems and suggesting avenues for further investigation. A survey of the closely related field of mammalian chemoreception is also included. A knowledge of elementary undergraduate chemistry and biology is assumed, and sufficient detail is presented to provide a useful introduction for those considering research in the area. Details of some of the key chemical techniques appropriate to such research are appended. The book will be interesting and practically informative to both chemists and biologists wishing to study mammalian semiochemistry.
