While it is generally accepted that the history of Rhodesia began in 1890, the history of that country's police force began a year earlier, in 1889. From the beginning, the Force held to the customs and traditions of a light cavalry regiment, with military ranks and disciplines and, reflecting the military ethos, laying emphasis upon a smartness of turnout and drill.
