The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) is the specialty nursing association serving the emergency nursing profession through research, publications, professional development, and injury prevention. The ENA asserts that optimal care of the pediatric patient is best achieved when all members of the emergency health care team utilize a systematic and standardized family-centered approach to the care of the pediatric patient. The position statement of the ENA states �the Association has the responsibility to facilitate pediatric-related continuing education opportunities for nurses providing care to pediatric patients. ENA recommends the Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) be the minimum educational standard for nurses providing emergency care to children." In 1993 this course was developed and it is now offered nationally as well as internationally. (http://www.ena.org) In 1996 the ENA was charged with developing a pediatric certification in emergency nursing examination and a core curriculum was required to provide the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge required for creating and administering such an examination. The authors of Core Curriculum for Pediatric Emergency Nursing state that this book has been written to assist emergency nurses in their assessment and treatment of ill and injured infants, children, and adolescents. It serves as a supplement for nurses who desire comprehensive content on pediatric emergency nursing.Core Curriculum for Pediatric Emergency Nursing provides an overview of the essentials for treating pediatric patients in emergency departments. It integrates the nursing process, i.e. assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, with pediatric physiology and psychosocial theories. The 47 chapters have been arranged into 9 sections. The text begins by providing an overview of management, ethical and legal issues, and future trends in pediatric nursing.
