Cancer Nursing Principles and Practice is a suggested initial purchase title on the Brandon/Hill Selected List of Print Nursing Books and Journals. It is a comprehensive textbook that covers the biology and immunology, prevention and diagnosis, treatment and its complications, and symptom management of this complex disorder. The section on the care of individuals with cancer is organized by cancer types and provides information on epidemiology, pathohysiology, clinical manifestations, classification and staging of tumors, and therapeutic approaches. Care plans are often included in table format. The chapter on "Quality of Care" presents extensive research findings on nursing interventions and patient outcomes. Other delivery of care chapters provide useful documentation reports and practice guidelines. The incorporation of evidence-based practices and research adds to the value of this text as a teaching and life-long learning tool. Another valuable reference aid is an extensive listing of resources for cancer nurses, which includes organizations, government agencies, clinical trial groups, and print and electronic resources. The final section addresses roles of the advanced practice nurse and tackles political and professional issues such as regulation, prescriptive authority, reimbursement, and education. It is easy to see why this is a standard text in the field. In its fifth edition, it is still an essential resource for both the student nurse and the advanced nurse practitioner. It is highly recommended for all health sciences libraries with nursing programs.Reviewer: Josephine L. Dorsch, Health Sciences Librarian, University of Illinois at Chicago Library of the Health Sciences Peoria, jod@uic.eduCopyright 2001 YBP Library Services
