Amputations and Prosthetics: A Case Study Approach

The field of prosthetics has undergone major growth in the past several decades. Bioengineering research has led to the development of prosthetic components that duplicate many of the complex functions of both lower and upper extremities. There are prosthetic feet that provide varying degrees of dynamic response and mechanical and hydraulic knee mechanisms, some computer-driven, that respond to the mobility demands of both active and sedentary clients. PTs and PTAs must understand the functions and capabilities of these devices to properly help the client learn to walk again.
