Rothstein, Roy, and Wolf note in the preface to the Rehabilitation Specialist's Handbook that the information needed by the rehabilitation professional "is extraordinary" and that "its diversity defies anyone's memory." Through extensive diagrams, tables, illustrations and definitions the authors have provided a valuable quick reference to this information. The handbook is neither evaluative nor instructive. It is a simple compilation of information.Content is extremely varied. Anatomical and physiological features are illustrated and defined. Tests, test instruments, basic values, scales, classifications, and measurements are listed, diagrammed, and arranged in easy-to-read tables. In some cases the actual test instrument will be found in this book, in others the test is simply defined with a reference to the full instrument. Translation into Spanish, Italian, French and German is provided for commonly used phrases in history taking, examinations, assessments, and anatomical terms. The text has been expanded by a third from its first edition of 1991 and extensively revised. Sections on the Americans with Disabilities Act, geriatrics, outcome measures, and pharmacology have been added. The varied information is well arranged in logical sections. Each section is color tabbed and contains a brief guide to its contents. Tables and illustrations are well labeled and easy to read. References to further information can be found throughout the text. Clear diagrams and simple tables clarify complicated information. The indexing is excellent.Every rehabilitation and physical therapy department would like to have this book at hand. In the library, use will go far beyond the intended audience. While aimed at the rehabilitation professional, the handbook is a reference that includes information which professionals and students in many different health professions will find useful. Librarians in all types of libraries will find the handbook to be a valuable ready reference source.Reviewer: Bet Ison, Medical Librarian, Morehead, KY, bison@kih.net.Copyright 2000 YBP Library Services |
