The Appalachian folk tales in this book were originally told to the author by the hillmen of that area called the Appalachian Plateau, where the woods, rivers and valleys of the Cumberland Mountains stretch across parts of southwestern Virginia and eastern Kentucky. Herbert Maynor Sutherland was born in Dickenson County, Virginia, on October 29, 1893. After graduating from Concord College, he worked in and around lumber camps, where he acquired the nickname "Joy." Some time after serving overseas in World War I, he worked for the New York Times. Due to his health, he returned to Dickenson County, where, in 1939, he acquired the county weekly newspaper and named it The Dickensonian. He retired in 1963 and died on April 22, 1967. |
