PreS-Gr 1-- Subdued pastel drawings illustrate this imported picture book about the adventures of three kittens on their first excursion out of doors. After a dragonfly, a mouse, and a hen flee from them, the inquisitive trio grow bolder and decide to explore a field. They encounter a rabbit and chase after it heedlessly. Suddenly, they are confronted by a fierce barking dog and the tables are turned. Mother Cat appears instantly and drives the dog away. The Brave Little Kittens have learned a valuable lesson about the real world and return to the security of home. Exhausted, all fall asleep but one, who lies awake rehashing the day's events and wondering what tomorrow will bring. The primitive childlike drawings capture the essence of fuzzy, wide-eyed, curious kittens. Double-page spreads and careful placement of text add to the charm of this simple anthropomorphic story.-- Barbara B.
