Gr 6-9?An objective look at seven prominent figures from British, Canadian, and American history, not all of whom were lawmen, but each of whom dedicated at least part of his life to making the world a safer place and bringing criminals to justice. Included are several familiar names, such as FBI agent Eliot Ness, who helped put Al Capone behind bars. The true story of Allan Pinkerton, America's first private eye, will be interesting to students because it details his pursuit of Jesse and Frank James. The chapter about Scotland Yard founder Sir Robert Peel tells very little about his life, but focuses instead upon a famous Scotland Yard detective named Adolphus Williamson, and features a brief history of the Yard to the present day. There are some unexpected inclusions: Congressman Estes Kefauver, who is often remembered for his investigations of the criminal underworld's ties to big business, and Simon Wiesenthal, who has dedicated his later life to bringing Nazi war criminals to justice. In chronological order from the 1800s to the present day, this book is easy to read and helpful for research, since there is an extensive index. Black-and-white photos appear throughout.?Phyllis Graves, Creekwood Middle School, Kingwood, TX
