Discusses the decisions faced by such explorers as Christopher Columbus, James Cook, Samuel de Champlain, and Robert Scott, offers options these men needed to consider, and analyzes the courses of action they chose.
Gr 7-10-A unique treatment of a common subject. Aaseng presents the major decisions and dilemmas that Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, Captain James Cook, Samuel de Champlain, Meriwether Lewis, Hernán Cortés, and Robert Scott each faced on their historic journeys. After providing background information and setting the scene, the author describes the pros and cons of several options, and readers are invited to choose one. Then, he explains which choice the explorer actually made, the results of that decision, and an analysis of its consequences. This approach is effective in engaging readers' attention and making them think about the historical context of these figures as well as about the challenges they confronted. However, some students may find the fact that Aaseng does not identify the explorer until his decision is revealed to be somewhat distracting. Many black-and-white reproductions, photographs, and maps (with routes) complement the text. A worthwhile addition.-William C.
