Gr 6-9 -Following an overview and history of this position, Emert focuses on eight "exceptional" people, whether good or bad. She begins with William Wirt, the ninth attorney general. He served for 12 years, the longest term in the history of the office. The book ends with Janet Reno, the first woman attorney general. John Mitchell comes across as a man who put politics before fairness and whose honesty was questioned many times. There is one chapter (about 15 pages) for each person, and the author presents a thorough, balanced look at the tenure of each. Black-and-white photos are placed on nearly every spread; political cartoons and sidebars with definitions or explanations of historical events are also included. The epilogue introduces John Ashcroft and Albert Gonzales. A balanced approach to update the 349s.-Linda Beck, Indian Valley Public Library, Telford, PA [Page 174].
