SummaryAuthor Biography

Presenting a critical examination of the evolution of Africa’s human rights in the post-Cold War era, this collection methodically explores the challenges of achieving human rights on this continent. The chapters provide a uniquely pan-African perspective on the achievements, failings, accomplishments, and deficiencies of the various human rights activists and institutions seeking to improve the lives of Africa’s 800 million inhabitants. The contributors to this multidisciplinary volume are all active in the arena of African human rights and come from fields of expertise as wide-ranging as law, politics, gender studies, international relations, economics, and history.

John Akokpari is a senior lecturer in the political studies department at the University of Cape Town and a former lecturer and researcher at Dalhousie University, St Mary's University, and the University of Lesotho. He has published widely on a variety of topics concerning African politics, including civil society, democratization, development, foreign policy, globalization, international migration, and conflicts management. Daniel Shea Zimbler is a researcher at the Centre for Conflict Resolution in Cape Town, South Africa, and was awarded the James Curry dissertation prize while at the University of Oxford. Francis Deng is the director of the Center for Displacement Studies, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute, and a former ambassador of Sudan to the United States. He is the author and coauthor of numerous publications including African Reckoning, Protecting the Dispossessed, Sovereignty as Responsibility, and Tradition and Modernization
