The fishing community described in this study has remained comparatively isolated from mainstream European culture, retaining a much less compartmentalized communal nature than the rest of society. Brogger examines marriages and family structure; manners, behavior, and communal living; the social organization of fishing; supernatural beliefs connected with fishing; and healing and belief to portray life in this distinct society in central Portugal.
