These magical islands are soaring in popularity, with property construction, flights and international arrivals rocketing. From the long stretches of shimmering, sandy beaches of Boavista to the lush green peaks and valleys of Santo Antão, Cape Verde has something for everybody.Journalist Aisling Irwin has written about Cape Verde for 11 years. Colum Wilson is a specialist in humanitarian aid; he currently advises the UK government on aid to West Africa.

Excerpts

ROCKS APPEAR AND LIFE ARRIVES

According to local lore, when God was satisfied with Creation, and brushed his hands together, the crumbs that fell unnoticed from his fingers into the sea formed Cape Verde.

The geographical explanation for their existence is just as beguiling. Under the plates of the Earth’s crust lie ‘hot spots’ of bubbling magma, one of which is several hundred kilometers west of Senegal. Every so often, when the conditions of heat and pressure are right, this hot spot erupts as a volcano, leaving an island in the Atlantic to mark where it has been. In this way, some 15 million years ago, the island of Sal was created. It was a mountain which has since been the victim of the ocean winds and has eroded away until all that remains is flat, brown rock. The hot spot erupted every few millions of years to make another pimple on the Atlantic. Today it is still putting the final touches to youthful Fogo, which lies in the southwest. The island is 100,000 years old and one senses that brooding Fogo gazes east towards Sal preparing to spend the next ten million years weathering down to a similar fate.
