This book studies the development of the Catholic Church in China since the country opened itself to the world and began normal diplomatic relations with the United States in 1979. On the one hand, the author looks at Sino-Vatican relations for more than thirty years. On the other hand, she studies the Chinese Catholic Church itself, the organization and personnel, its relations with overseas churches, and the situations of Chinese Catholics.

Cindy Yik-yi Chu is a professor in the Department of History at Hong Kong Baptist University.
