Summary

Crisis--whether natural disaster, technological failure, economic collapse, or shocking acts of violence--can offer opportunities for collaboration, consensus building, and transformative social change. Communities often experience a surge of collective energy and purpose in its aftermath. Rather than focus on typical government and private-sector efforts to deal with crises through increased prevention and mitigation measures, Collaborative Resilience explores the ways we can harness the postcrisis force for recovery and change before it is eclipsed by helplessness and hopelessness. The analyses and case studies examine how communities can develop "communicative resilience," building trust and interdependence to cultivate new forms of knowledge, identity, and governance. The book, which reflects recent work on resilience in the fields of planning and natural resource management, examines a wide range of approaches to collaboration in both theory and practice. The case studies describe communities from the United States to South Africa that have survived and even thrived through adaptive consensus building, transformative resilience, and the development of learning networks. These collaborative efforts include environmental assessment methods in Cozumel, Mexico; the governance of a "climate protected community" in the Blackfoot Valley of Montana; fisheries management in Southeast Asia's Mekong region; and the restoration of natural fire regimes in U.S. forests.
