Summary

The secret of happiness, about which philosophers have disputed for so many ages, could be bought for a penny, and carried in the waistcoat pocket: portable ecstasies could be corked up in a pint bottle. Paradise? So thought Thomas de Quincey, but he soon discovered nobody will laugh long who deals much with opium.

Author Biography

Thomas De Quincey (1785–1859) was an English essayist of the Romantic period who studied at Oxford, failing to take his degree but discovering opium. He is the author of On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts. Howard Marks is a former drug smuggler and the author of Mr. Nice.
