Summary

Founded in 1898, Deutsche Grammophon has come to define excellence in recorded classical music. With a star-studded roster of celebrated artists, Deutsche Grammophon revolutionized both the recording industry and classical music like no other label before or since. Now, for the first time, this legendary recording company receives the full-length history it has long deserved, originally published in German in celebration of the firm's 111th anniversary. This lavishly produced volume - complete with 2 CD's featuring the best of Deutsche Grammophon from the past through the present - will be a must-have for the expert and the casual aficionado alike. It is the first and definitive chronicle of one of the essential institutions of classical music. With unprecedented access to Deutsche Grammophon archives and including interviews with performers, producers, engineers and former and current executives, this unique book contains a treasure trove of visual material (reproductions of documents, album covers, and behind the scenes photographs of performances and recording sessions) that trace the history of the label from its founding through its status today as a champion of musical talent from the established stars to the up-and-coming performers (such as Dudamel, Grimaud, Villazon, Netrebko, among others) sure to be the prima donnas and maestros of tomorrow. Among the featured interviewees and contributors are such leading names in the world of classical music as Günther Breest, Michel Glotz, Hans Hirsch, Rainer Hoepfner, Bill Holland, Andreas Holschneider, Alfred Kaine, Eliette von Karajan, Elisabeth Köhler, Michael Lang, Rainer Maillard, Ewald Markl, Hanno Rinke, Craig Urquhart, Hans Wildhagen, and many others. Intersperesed are passages and citations from the many artists who have recorded with Deutsche Grammophon including Pierre Boulez, Plácido Domingo, Emerson String Quartet, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elina Garanca, Hélène Grimaud, Magdalena Kozená, Lang Lang, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Anna Netrebko, Rolando Villazón, and many others - making this the most sought after gift of the season for the classical music lover.
