Continuing debates over the meaning of development and awareness of the persistence of poverty have resulted in increasing concern over how to 'do' development and what role various organizations should play in the achievement of development. Since World War two in particular, there have been an ever increasing number of organizations involved in development, undertaking different activities, at different scales, with different motivations, and with differing levels of success. It is necessary to identify and evaluate these varied organizations, and to recognize their successes and failures. Development Organisationsexplores the range and role of organizations involved in development policy and practice. This includes community-based organizations and civil society actors, international non-governmental organizations, state and other national-based actors, global forms of governance, international financial institutions and transnational corporations. It considers the historical and contemporary role of each of these actors, explains the complex theoretical debates over their existence and activities, and uses case studies from a variety of contexts to critically assess their effectiveness.
