Excerpts

The purpose of this review manual is to help prepare you for examinations in your EMT Basic course and your certification examination. The manual consists of a series of self-assessment sections that can identify your strengths and weaknesses in relation to the information you are studying. If you are a currently certified EMT Basic, this manual can serve as a refresher tool itself or as a method to determine where your knowledge has deteriorated and the need for specific review. The EMT-Basic Self-Assessment Exam Prepconsists of multiple-choice type items that are organized according to the US. Department of Transportation's National Standard EMT Basic Curriculum. Enhancement sections are included on stroke, seizures, and abdominal pain that are beyond the D.O.T. curriculum. Every item has a corresponding answer and rationale. In addition, every item, with the exception of those that are considered "enhancement items," is referenced to a specific D.O.T. objective. This can be found in the Answers and Rationales section. Therefore, it is possible for you to refer back to any one of the EMT Basic textbooks for more specific information on that item or overall concept. The authors, contributing item writer, and manuscript reviewers all have extensive knowledge and experience as EMS educators. The items they contributed were developed in a "teacher-made test format" to allow you to test your knowledge and understanding of the material. When compiled into a series of sections, the items serve as a self-assessment tool to identify particular strengths and weaknesses in your knowledge and understanding of the information. This allows you to concentrate on specific' sections that have been identified as a weakness. A comprehensive examination has also been provided to allow you to test your knowledge at the EMT Basic level. This manual should be used as a tool to better prepare you for your examinations. However, there is no better preparation than studying and understanding the information that has been presented to you in your course. To best ensure your success on the examination, we encourage you to study first until you feel confident that you know the information and then use this manual as a self-assessment to determine how well you know the information. When you have identified areas of weakness, do not simply study the manual or review items. Go back and study the information presented to you, study the textbook, and use other sources to better understand the information. Once you again feel confident you know the material, retest yourself using the review manual to determine if you are better prepared for that section. We hope this manual assists you in preparing for your examination. However, when it comes time to manage a patient in the prehospital environment, there is no time for preparation. You must draw on your existing knowledge and skills to successfully and efficiently treat the patient. Thus, it is imperative to good patient care that you are truly prepared not only to pass that examination but to take care of each and every patient you encounter to the best of your ability. Good luck in your EMS endeavors! ' Joseph J. Mistovich Edward B. Kuvlesky
