Summary

The internationally respected editors and authors have combined to produce this major new textbook and reference source in a single volume, covering all aspects of equine medicine, surgery and reproduction. The text is supported by a wealth of over 1200 illustrations of the highest quality - colour photographs, radiographic and ultrasound images, and diagrams. The book is systems-based and each individual system is introduced with precise information on the relevant basic anatomy and physiology, standard clinical examination techniques and useful differential diagnostic aids. This is followed by diseases and disorders that are pertinent to that system, grouped together either anatomically or based on presenting clinical signs. Each condition is described using consistent headings - definition/overview, aetiology and pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnoses, management/treatment, and prognosis. Additional chapters deal with the foal, with wounds and behavioural problems. The focus throughout is on providing clinically relevant information required for practical case management, plus sufficient background on causes and disease processes to enable readers to understand the conditions and the rationale for diagnostic and treatment options.Equine Medicine and Surgery will be of lasting value as a teaching and training resource for equine specialists, a ready reference for non-specialist practitioners, and a textbook for students in veterinary medicine and related equine courses.

Excerpts

THE FIELDS of equine medicine, surgery, and reproductionhave developed massively over the last 25-30years and new knowledge and techniques for the diagnosisand treatment of all sorts of conditions and diseasescontinues to be added. This new knowledge is presentedinitially in scientific papers and congresses around theworld and gradually is distilled down to appear in neweditions of textbooks. There continues to be published anincreasing number of equine-based textbooks, oftenconcentrating on one body system and written from aspecialist point of view. Very few have been produced inthe last 10 years that specifically address the needs of theclinician who is not a full-time equine specialist or theequine-interested undergraduate or postgraduate veterinarystudent. This textbook is designed and writtenwith these colleagues very much in mind. The breadth of content in this book is large, covering acomprehensive range of topics in equine medicine, surgery, and reproduction, and it is organized intochapters using a systems-based approach. Each individualsystem is introduced with precise information on the relevantbasic anatomy and physiology, standard clinicalexamination techniques, and useful differential diagnosticaids. The remainder of the chapter is split up intodiseases and disorders that are pertinent to that system. The diseases and disorders are grouped together, eitheranatomically or based on presenting clinical signs, intosections where specific problems or diseases are presentedin a strict format that is common to the whole book. Thuseach disorder is presented under the individual headingsof definition/overview, etiology/pathophysiology, clinicalpresentation, differential diagnosis, diagnosis, management, and prognosis. These systems-based chapters arecomplemented by additional chapters on specific areassuch as behaviorial problems and wounds. The focus is onproviding clinically relevant information that is requiredfor good case management, but with enough concise informationabout etiology and pathophysiology to enablereaders to understand the conditions and the rationale fordiagnostic and treatment options. Some conditions thatproduce multisystem manifestations may be discussed inmore than one chapter, with each chapter providing a differentemphasis, thereby ensuring a complete overallcontent, but with less duplication. The scope of equine veterinary medicine makes itimpossible for any one book to act as the sole resource forall areas. With this in mind and considering the target readershipof this book, complicated or advanced diagnosticand treatment techniques are mentioned, but not coveredin detail; however, further reading lists are provided toguide the reader to additional information. These includematerial such as reviews deemed to be of particularly highquality by chapter authors, as well as selected primary scientificreports and websites.Patterns of disease can be highly variable between differentgeographic regions, and while no book can providea comprehensive overview of all geographical differences, the editors and authors have endeavored to make thechapters in this book useful and relevant to a broad internationalaudience. It is hoped that in the future this aimwill be enhanced by the translation of the text into severalof the major languages of the world.A unique feature of this book is the inclusion of a largenumber of images, including color photographs, radiographicand ultrasound images, and diagrams. Images areprovided for the majority of topics and are intended tocomplement the text on the basis that a 'picture speaks athousand words'. The inclusion of clinical images can beuseful in further understanding the pathogenesis andpathophysiology of certain conditions, helping the patternrecognition of some diseases and disorders, and visualizingthe surgical pathology or procedures that general cliniciansand students rarely see. It is also anticipated that thenumber and quality of images will be a val
