Summary

May, 1921. Elena's confused childhood is the legacy which leaves her outwardly confident but inwardly troubled. She believes her mother to be Hermione, and is hurt by the fact that she shows an obvious dislike of her. When Elena starts asking awkward questions the reason becomes clear. Seeking love and affection, the seven-year-old child turns to her nanny, Winifred, and adored father, Oscar, instead. Elena is thrilled when Hermione gives birth to a baby boy, James, but her mother is determined that Oscar should rewrite his will and make his new son the sole beneficiary. This is the start of a chain of events which will lead to heartbreak and despair for the family. But Elena was born a survivor and is determined to discover the truth about her past.
