But typical Marie, her eye patch reinforced her piratical swagger of guts and glamour - and although the incident left its scars, she was quickly back on the front line reporting on 9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq, Gaza, and the Arab Spring. She died in Baba Amr, Homs doing the job she had made her life. In an email a few days before she died, she wrote: "They are killing with impunity here, it is sickening and anger-making." Her death has robbed the world of a multi-prize-winning journalist and the victims of war have lost their most powerful advocate.
