Summary

This beautifully written biography, with a foreword by Philippa Gregory, explores the forgotten significance of the life of Horace Alexander, an English Quaker who played a significant part in relations between Indian nationalist leaders and the British Government in the years before the transfer of power in 1947. Having come to know Gandhi well, he was entrusted by him as an intermediary, and, at the same time, enjoyed the confidence of Labour and Conservative ministers, from R. A. Butler to Sir Stafford Cripps.
