Summary

In recent years a broader and richer idea of human security has become increasingly influential among academics and international development practitioners. The aim is to generate a human-centered construct that can incorporate various dimensions of the downside risks affecting the generalized well-being or dignity of people. The construct human security in an African context incorporates an array of different components and cannot be understood in isolation from the forces that are driving the development process and the impact of neoliberalism, the dominant global policy agenda of the past few decades. This book considers gender dimensions of a number of issues central to human security and development in Africa including food security, AIDs and its treatment, legal rights, violence, conflict resolution, informal work, the environment, and poverty alleviation strategies. The concept of human security is fully explored and critically evaluated relative to its capacity to reflect gender disparities in the context of development.
