Summary

Some men, Shakespeare wrote, have greatness thrust upon them. They do not seek greatness; it seeks them. Such men, though they might reject the thought, are men like Evan Thompson, Ronald Peterson, and Roger Twigg. Their experiences during World War II as members of the First Ranger Battalion-the legendary Darby's Rangers-are the subject matter of William E. Staab's Not for Glory.

Author Biography

William E. Staab has had a fascination with World War II since childhood. During the Korean War, he tried to enlist in the U.S. Army, but was turned down because he was only sixteen years old. Born in Indiana and raised in Wisconsin, he received bachelor's degrees in 1957 from Concordia College and Seminary, and from Concordia Teachers College in 1958. In 1963 he earned a master's degree in German from the University of Michigan. For thirty years he taught languages at the high school level and coached football, track, and basketball. In 1970 he was ordained a Lutheran minister. He is now semiretired as a pastor.
