Summary

The declining health standards and the threat of infectious disease outbreaks in China have raised important questions about China#xE2;#xAC;"s internal transition: why did the same reform-induced dynamics produce an economic miracle, but failed to reproduce the same success in the health sector? This book examines the political and policy dynamics of health governance in post-Mao China. It explores the political-institutional roots of the health challenges and the evolution of the leaders#xE2;#xAC;" policy response in contemporary China. It argues that reform-induced institutional dynamics, when interacting with the Maoist health policy structure in an authoritarian political setting, have not only contributed to the rising health challenges in contemporary China, but also shaped the patterns and outcomes of government response to those challenges. As the world economy and international security are increasingly vulnerable to major disease outbreaks in China, this study of China#xE2;#xAC;"s health challenges sheds much critical light on global health security in general, and in particular human ability to cope with the next pandemic.
