Summary

George Herbert (1593-1633), one of the greatest English poets, was also a major figure in the shaping of a distinctive 'Anglican spirituality' during the seventeenth century. Though neither of these terms was in use at the time, the richly memorable writings of Herbert and his contemporaries - Lancelot Andrewes, John Donne, Henry Vaughan and Thomas Traherne - capture the spirit of the fledgling Church of England, steering a middle way between the more extreme claims of Calvinism on the one hand and Roman Catholicism on the other.

Author Biography

Philip Sheldrake is a Professorial Research Fellow at Durham University, and a regular Visiting Professor at several American universities and schools of theology. He is the author of several books in the field of academic spirituality, and edited The New SCM Dictionary of Christian Spirituality.
