Summary

The investigation and treatment of hypertension, a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease throughout the world, remains a challenge, even in developed countries. Although antihypertensives have been available for 50 years, the rational and effective use of the myriad of existing drugsremains a concern, as does the desire to identify patients with secondary hypertension from the mass of individuals with primary or essential hypertension. The aim of this handbook is to provide state-of-the-art information concerning the pathophysiology, diagnosis, investigation and management of hypertension in the 21st century. The book covers the underlying physiological, genetic and environmental components which may contribute towards itspathogenesis as well as the currently available therapies and clinical trials in hypertension. The chapters are clearly laid-out and written for the non-expert but contain sufficient detail to serve as a useful reference for the experienced physician. The book is completely up-to-date andevidence-based, while the authors are recognized experts in hypertension based at one of Europe's leading hypertension centres.

Author Biography


Dr Joseph Cheriyan completed his medical training in Sheffield and his postgraduate training in Nottingham and London before pursuing his specialist training in London and Cambridge. His main interests are in clinical cardiovascular research using non-invasive techniques and he actively participates in medical education. He remains a practising clinician with an interest in hypertension and cardiovascular medicine. Dr Carmel McEniery completed her PhD at the University of Queensland, Australia, and is now Senior Research Associate in the Clinical Pharmacology Unit, University of Cambridge, based at Addenbrooke's Hospital. She is also a college lecturer in physiology at Churchill College in Cambridge. Her main area of research is cardiovascular haemodynamics, and in particular, age-related arterial stiffening. She is also leading research into the mechanisms underlying the development of hypertension in young individuals. Dr Ian Wilkinson is Senior Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge, Consultant Physician at Addenbrooke's Hospital, and Fellow of Trinity Hall in Cambridge. He is currently secretary of the European ARTERY Society, and a Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society. He trained in General Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology initially at Oxford, and then at the University of Edinburgh, before taking up his current appointment in 2000. He currently directs the University of Cambridge's Vascular Research Clinics. He has built up a clinical research group focusing on cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology with an international reputation. His main research interest is cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology in health and disease, and in particular arterial stiffness and endothelial function. Dr Wilkinson has lectured internationally to a wide spectrum of audiences from patients to cardiologists and basic scientists.
