Summary

Dr. Guten uses his experience as medical director of the Sports Medicine Institute at Sinai Samaritan Medical Center in Milwaukee and as an orthopedic surgeon to provide readers with an easy-to-follow guide to use in conjunction with their doctor for understanding, preventing, and treating injuries sustained during activity. His "Stop, Caution, Go" system summarizes ten recommendations for each of the common injuries suffered in outdoor recreation, from herniated neck disks to stress fractures of the foot. Recommendations are given for: activity level, alternative activities, rehabilitation exercises, appropriate support, use of ice or heat, medication, equipment, nutrition, fluids, and surfaces used for exercise. Forty injuries common to participants in hiking, backpacking, bicycling, trail running, rock climbing, mountaineering, paddling, skiing, and surfing are discussed and analyzed.

Author Biography

Gary N. Guten, M.D., is an expert in the treatment of sports injuries. As medical director of the Sports Medicine Institute at Sinai Samaritan Medical Center in Milwaukee and an orthopedic surgeon, he treats hundreds of athletes every year. He also served for ten years as the team physician for the Milwaukee Brewers. And as a marathon runner himself, Dr. Guten understands the pain and frustration of sports injuries.

In Injuries in Outdoor Recreation, Dr. Guten uses his experience to provide readers with an easy-to-follow system for understanding their injuries and treating them in conjunction with their doctor.
