Summary

Rio de Janeiro, one of the world's most iconic cities, defined by the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, is full of vibrant contrasts: of youthful energy and grand traditions, of luxuriant vegetation and innovative architecture. Its unique lifestyle is as diverse and multi-faceted as it is culturally rich. Along with its stunning beaches, breathtaking views, and spectacular scenery, Rio de Janeiro is home to some remarkable modernist and contemporary homes, and at the same time, some of Rio's aging colonial gems are slowly being revitalized. This volume reveals the riches of Rio's fabulous lifestyle through a tour of more than twenty-five private homes presented here for the first time: a colonial-era mansion in Santa Teresa, Rio's artistic quarter, surrounded by lush gardens planted with mango and apricot trees; the private apartment of Joao Niemeyer with its stunning view and fabulous collection of modern art; sleek contemporary apartments and houses that blur the boundaries of interior and exterior--featuring warm wood-based design and large floor-to-ceiling glass walls, gracious terraces and shaded swimming pools, where furniture comes from Brazilian modernist designers such as Oscar Niemeyer and Sérgio Rodrigues. Traditional estates and fazendas outside the city are also featured, fitted out with tropical woods, silk drapes, and sunlight-filtering shutters. A mecca for style-conscious travelers, Rio buzzes with an unstoppable creative energy, and the up-and-coming city prepares for two major world events: World Cup Football in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016. This insider's visit of Rio de Janeiro will be a revelation for those who already know Rio and for anyone seeking to discover its design heritage, cuisine, and unique way of life.
