Summary

Interest in experimental and avant-garde poetics is blossoming, to which a large number of recent publications and exhibitions over the last years bear witness. Concrete poetry is no exception to this trend, and interest in concrete poetry has been reinvigorated recently by the critical debate on digital poetry, for which concrete poetry is frequently cited as a precursor. However, concrete poetry, although it is a genuinely international phenomenon with practitioners in Europe, in the Americas and in Asia, has up to now tended to be assessed mainly in terms of national categories, or individual protagonists, groups or movements. This essay collection offers the first and urgently needed comprehensive and comparative study of concrete poetry worldwide. It offers a wide-ranging general introduction to the major national concrete factions, including a chronology of the movement in tabular form, as well as concise discussions of poetics, works and theoretical positions of the various protagonists from diverse cultural backgrounds. The collection will also introduce a new approach by exploring the various forms of concrete in different cultural, political and linguistic contexts. All essays introduce the respective national concrete poetics as specific cultural adaptations of a shared set of general concrete principles, and thus highlight both their outstanding and original features as well as themes and concerns all concrete poets have in common
