Summary

The International Symposium on History of Machines and Mechanisms is a new initiative to promote explicitly researches and publications in the field of the history of TMM (theory of machines and mechanisms). It was held at the University of Cassino, Italy, from 11 to 13 May 2000. These Proceedings contain about 40 papers by authors from around the world. The papers cover the wide field of the history of mechanical engineering and particularly the history of TMM. The contributions address mainly technical aspects of historical developments of machines and mechanisms. The history of the IFToMM (International Federation of TMM) is also outlined. Original sources are referenced in the papers so that this book can also be considered a kind of handbook on history of machines and mechanisms. This book is of interest to researchers, graduate students and engineers specializing or addressing attention to the history of science and technology, and particularly the history of machines and mechanisms.
