Summary

In 1846, in 1853, and in 1857, Henry Thoreau made journeys to the Maine backwoods, voyages of exterior and interior discovery, described in this volume in prose of characteristic craftmanship. The work contains not only Thoreau's evocative renderings of the primitive forest but an impassioned protest against its despoilment in the name of commerce and sport, which even in the 1850s threatened to deprive Americans of that wilderness in which he found 'the preservation of the world.' Originally published in 1864, two years after Thoreau's death, the work was reconstructed by Professor Moldenhauer as, from all surviving evidence, Thoreau intended it. The text and index of the volume are that of the authoritative clothbound edition of "The Maine Woods," approved by the Center for Editions of American Authors and also available from Princeton University Press.
