Customer Reviews

More Than Satisfied  June 11, 2011

Lewis wrote his first published article in 1936 and celebrated his eightieth birthday earlier this year. The Middle East is a fitting capstone to his long career, surveying with broad strokes so many of the topics he has previously written about in more detail. This new edition for 2010 has been thoroughly updated and reorganized to provide vital coverage and analysis of the key issues and headline-making events in this dynamic area of the world. All in all, I found this an informative easily read textbook that left me wanting more.

Middle East, 12th Edition: 5 out of 5 stars based on 1 user reviews.

Summary

Now in its twelfth edition, The Middle East is considered a classic among students, professors, and researchers seeking to understand this ever-changing region. This new edition for 2010 has been thoroughly updated and reorganized to provide vital coverage and analysis of the key issues and headline-making events in this dynamic area of the world.

Renowned for its balanced, informative, and accessible treatment of the complex and controversial affairs that make the Middle East so important and so volatile, The Middle East takes an in-depth approach to trends and events in the region as well as the history of its nations.

The Middle East has become a staple text in college courses on the modern Middle East and is an essential resource for academic and public library collections. Major revisions in this eleventh edition make it an even more important component of library collections that serve patrons interested in this crucial region.

‘’This superb reference work for graduate students and undergraduate majors in Middle East studies could be assigned reading for courses in modern history, comparative politics or international relations. The quality of the thematic and country essays is uniformly high, presenting the entire set of countries of the Middle East and North Africa as well as timely perspectives on regional rivalries, political economy, governance, civil society, and social change.’’ -Clement M. Henry, Department of Government, University of Texas at Austin

The Middle East has been a godsend for anyone who believes that study of the Middle East must be based on data and an understanding of the history of the area. My students consistently reported that it was a valuable resource. The new format of the twelfth edition promises a rich set of analytical chapters crafted by respected scholars. The importance of this new edition is that it avoids the clichÃÂs and polarization that too often distort understanding the complex issues which this region faces. I recommend The Middle East as a fair, comprehensive study of diverse and complicated states. ‘’-Donna Lee Bowen, Department of Political Science, Brigham Young University
