Summary

Growth and interest in resurfacing hip arthroplasty is due entirely to one surgeon, Mr Derek McMinn, who developed a resurfacing hip implant that is both conservative and a sustainable alternative to total hip replacement. Mr McMinn is recognised globally as the father of modern resurfacing techniques; he is also an educator to the new generation of orthopedic surgeons who wish to understand and develop techniques accommodating resurfacing arthroplasty in their practice. Hip Resurfacing brings together some of the most prominent names in hip arthroplasty, and together the authors review the practical aspects of resurfacing while they also documenting the development and science of the modern resurfacing device. Modern Hip Resurfacing represents the combined knowledge and current experience of the revolutionary technique of hip resurfacing and provides fascinating insight into one of the most significant developments in hip arthroplasty.

Author Biography

Over 200 clinicians visit Mr McMinn in Birmingham each year to learn the surgical techniques associated with the 'Birmingham Hip'. As an educator and teacher, Mr McMinn is without equal in the art of resurfacing arthroplasty, and having performed in excess of 2000 modern hip resurfacings his experience and knowledge is without parallel in this specific area of hip arthroplasty. He is sought after to speak on resurfacing at all major Orthopaedic conferences and meetings worldwide. As an innovator he shows exceptional insight since all modern resurfacing arthroplasty follow closely to the designs of the McMinn resurfacing device, even though many differ in the metallurgical aspect of their implants. The clinical success and follow up of all of Mr McMinn's patients have been independently audited by the Oswestry Research Group in the UK. The monumental growth and success of modern resurfacing arthroplasty is now a global phenomenon which has resulted in all of the major orthopedic companies initiating programmes to follow the metal on metal resurfacing techniques developed by Mr.McMinn
