Summary

Drawing on cutting-edge information from the fields of medicine, neuroscience, and child psychology, Chasnoff shows how many of the learning and behavior problems we see in children, from low IQ and poor school performance to patterns of impulsivity often diagnosed as ADHD, result from a baby's exposure to drugs and alcohol while in the womb. "The Mystery of Risk" traces the history of the study of fetal malformation back to the time of Aristotle before presenting a resounding call for preventive, integrated systems of care and treatment for high-risk children and their families.
