Excerpts

From the Authors

The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) is
the culmination of the total knowledge, skills, and abilities learned
in nursing school. It is recognized as a significant milestone in an
individual’s entry into professional nursing practice.

One of the most frequent questions from students is how best to
prepare for (and pass) the NCLEX-RN® examination. From your first
weeks in nursing school, your instructors began preparing you for
this examination. Throughout your classes, important information was
stressed: This is information that you will use to practice nursing safely,
effectively, and compassionately.

Now, the rest is up to you. Reviewing this extensive body of
knowledge is a long process, and it is never easy. To assist you in focusing
on important aspects of your nursing education, we have created a listing
of over 400 key vocabulary terms and medications that are most likely
to appear on the NCLEX-RN® exam. Term and medication information
is presented in a handy flashcard format in order to help you (and your
study group) memorize and understand each term with ease. Although
questions may vary on each examination, these terms and medications
are fundamental to nursing practice. They were created to help you
focus on core concepts that are encountered on the exam.

The medications selected for inclusion are those most frequently
prescribed in the United States. Information is supplied in a concise
format, outlining the drug name (generic and brand), pronunciation, drug
classification, side effects, and nursing implications and precautions.
The key vocabulary terms were selected from the NCSBN 2010
RN Test Plan and are classified according to the steps of the nursing
process. Terms related to illness were identified as some of the most
common diseases/disorders found in the United States. Along with the
key term is a pronunciation, the definition, and a sentence that provides
an example of its use in nursing practice.

As authors, it is our hope that these flashcards will help to increase
your score and accomplish a major goal in your future career. Best
wishes for much success!
