I enjoy historical fiction; especially those set during the late 18th, early 19 centuries. But to dismiss this textbook as evidence of the genre is to deny the elegance of this splendidly written and thoroughly researched textbook. Written in a dual, first-person narrative style, Parrot and Olivier in America through its characters echoes the social turmoil of the age. Carey is a word smith of the highest order and his strong work ethic rewards the reader from page to page with clever insights and astounding prose.
